Association of propionate with coronary artery disease in a large cross-sectional study

Abstract Background Microbiome has been linked to the pathogenesis of coronary artery disease (CAD) but data providing direct evidence for an association short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) like propionate with CAD are lacking. Purpose To study in blood samples presence Methods This was a cross-sectional enrolling patients admitted invasive angiography university hospital Germany. Results The included 691 (median n [IQR] age, 69 [60–78] years; 406 men [59%]). A total 368 had invasively confirmed at least one stenosis ≥50% 323 non 194 excluded CAD. 129 additional without suspicion diabetes/smoking also no group. significant lower levels (median) 6.08 μM (IQR, 4.31–7.65) compared groups 6.92 (4.89–9.25, <0.05). Linear regression multivariate analysis adjusted gender, body mass index, hypertension, smoking, diabetes hyperlipidemia revealed odds ratio 0.92 (CI 0.89–0,96, p<0.001) as predictor Conclusions provides large-scale protective role development CAD, independent other factors.
